چکیده

Area Editor: John H. Roberts Despite conventional wisdom that firm profits decrease with competitive entry, the empirical literaturefinds a number of situationswhere the entry of an equivalent-quality competitor into amarket led to higher profits for the incumbents. Our paper uses a standard linear Hotelling (1929)market to study how location choices affect the possibility that profits increase for the incumbents with competitive entry by a new rival. We show that profits of all incumbents can increase after competitive entry even if thenewcompetitor is located such that it competes directlywith only one of the incumbents. This asymmetric entry demonstrates two separate mechanisms that can lead to profit increases: first, profits can increase because a rival's pricing incentives have changed, causing the rival firm to increase its price. Second, entry can change a firm's own pricing incentives, which in turn cause the competitor to increase its price anticipating a higher-priced equilibrium. Either of these effects on their own can be sufficient for profits to increase. Of course, increased prices do not imply increased profits. Rather, profits only increase in scenarios where the higher prices offset the lost sales. As such, we note that profits for a monopolist are always higher than profits for firms facing any level of competition. Further, we show that average industry profitsmust eventually go to zero. Thus, the relationship betweenprofits and thenumber offirms in themarket for industrieswith profit-increasing entry follows a down–up–down shape. We discuss the implications this has on interpreting results from the empirical entry literature. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Effect of Asymmetric Water Entry on the Hydrodynamic Impact

The effect of the asymmetric water entry over a submerged part of a ship on the hydrodynamic impact is investigated numerically. A wedge body is considered to study and the problem is assumed to be two-dimensional. The Results of symmetric and asymmetric impacts are compared together. The effect is found significant in the numerical simulation. The maximum hydrodynamic pressure at a heel angle ...

Cross-Market Network Effect with Asymmetric Customer Loyalty: Implications for Competitive Advantage

A network effect exists in many industries (e.g., newspaper publishing, media, software) in which a seller sells both a primary and a secondary product (e.g., a newspaper publisher sells newspapers to readers and advertising space to advertisers), and the value of the secondary product depends on the size of the user base of the primary product. This paper examines the competitive implications ...

Co-development Ventures: Optimal Time of Entry and Profit-Sharing

We find the optimal time for entering a joint venture by two firms, and the optimal linear contract for sharing the profits. Our dataset shows that in practice, many contracts are based on fifty/fifty profit sharing. In our model, that happens in the following cases: symmetric information and contracts which include fixed cash payments; asymmetric information, fixed cash payments included, and ...

Profit rate stickiness and bank specific characteristics: Empirical study of panel hidden cointegration

Profit rate stickiness means the asymmetric behavior of banking profit rate with respect to positive and negative shocks. Scrutinizing this behavior would suggest a new perspective on policy tools and banking supervision. In this regard, this paper applies hidden panel cointegration, proposed by Hatemi-J (2018), to study profit rate and bank specific characteristics nexus for all banks listed o...
